Rifle weatherstation data details - September 2014

We have three weather stations for which data is collected centrally for the Rifle site. One of these is the Rifle meteorological station. The data for this comes to us through SOARS. The other two are stations which are recorded through weatherunderground. Other weatherstations can be added to this list.

These stations have some parameters in common, and also have some parameters which are unique to each station. In addition there are some differences in how data is recorded at each station. Details on each station are provided below.

Note that in addition to the measured parameters which are available through the web interface there is a calculated parameter (Total Daily Rainfall). This is calculated for each of the three stations.

STATION 1: RIFLE weatherstation.
Data for this station is collected by the DOE LM SOARS system, and (for those who really want to know), captured in rifle_ersp_met_station_0592 in vistavision. The following columns are present in this table

Of these, we expose the following parameters through the webinterface (based on a discussion with Boris). Some detail on these is provided behind each parameter
  • 1_barometric_pressure_corrected_mmhg_avg - This is barometric pressure (mmhg). Note that we have had several issues with this reading but it seems to be good as of Feb 2014
  • 2_rain_fall_in_tot - this is the rain fall over the measurement period (which is 5 minutes). So, if it rains steadily for 1 hour, and we have .12 inches, we will have 12 readings of 0.01 inches
  • 3_air_temperature_f_avg - Air temperature in F
  • 4_relative_humidity - Relative Humidity
  • 5_ws_mph_s_wvt - windspeed (mph)
  • 6_winddir_d1_wvt - winddirection (degrees)
  • 7_wind_chill_f_avg - Wind chill
  • 8_dew_point_f_avg - Dew point
  • 9_wet_bulb_temperature_f_avg - Wet bulb temperature
  • 10_heat_index_f_avg - Heat index
  • 11_wind_speed_mph_max - wind gust speed (mph)
  • 12_solar_radiation_avg - Solar radiation
The other parameters are not shown.

STATION 2 - KCORIFLE1
This station provides the following data

  • observation time (MT)
  • Temperature (degrees F)
  • Dew point
  • Humidity
  • Wind direction (in degrees)
  • windspeed (mph)
  • windgustspeed (mph)
  • Pressure (in inches)
  • precipitation rate (this is in inches/hr)
  • accumulation precipitation (cumulative precipitation over a day)

The pressure provided by KCORIFLE1 is converted to pressure in mmhg so as to be compatible with the pressure provided by the Rifle weatherstation. This is done by multiplication of the KCORIFLE1 reading with 25.4.

Note that weatherunderground does not give us a parameter which is identical to the one collected by the Rifle weatherstation. A discussion about some of the issues associated with rain fall data from weather underground can be found here

STATION 3 - MRFEC2
This station provides the following data

  • Dew point
  • Humidity
  • Wind direction (in degrees)
  • windspeed (mph)
  • windgustspeed (mph)
  • Solar (W/m2)
  • precipitation rate (this is in inches/hr)
  • accumulation precipitation (cumulative precipitation over a day)
As can be seen from this list MRFEC2 does not report pressure. KCORIFLE does not report Solar, for the rest KCORIFLE1 and MRFEC2 are the same in what they report
